When applying Defy wood stain it is important to follow certain guidelines for a beautiful long lasting finish. First and foremost, follow the manufacturers recommendations for the application process for the best results. It is necessary to prep the wood correctly prior to applying Defy. This can be done using Defy Wood Cleaner and Defy Wood Brightener.

Once the wood is clean it is ready for stain. Properly applying Defy so it does not dry shiny starts with only applying as much stain as the wood will absorb. Different wood surfaces will absorb stain differently depending on the type of wood, age, porosity, and condition. Start applying Defy to one board. Completely stain the entire board before starting on the next one. If the boards or area you are starting on are not that long in length you can do a couple at a time. But it is important to finish staining the whole piece of wood to eliminate any lap marks.

Once the Defy stain has been applied allow it to penetrate the wood for 10 minutes or so. After this wait time you should back brush or wipe away any excess puddles or drips of stain that have not been absorbed into the wood. If stain does not penetrate the wood after 10-15 minutes then it most likely is not going to. This means the wood has absorbed all it can. Over applying the stain will only cause it to dry shiny and may cause peeling and flaking issues down the road. In the case of wood staining, more is not always better.

If the finish does appear shiny after a few days of curing then it was most likely over applied. To correct this problem it may be necessary to sand the shiny areas or wash the wood again using a wood stain stripper to reveal bare wood. Then reapply a coat of stain being careful not to over apply a second time.

Kiln dried after treatment (KDAT) lumber offers many advantages to homeowners looking for the natural beauty of real wood. This type of wood is kiln dried to remove the excess moisture, cutting down on the wait period prior to staining or sealing. When using Defy wood stains the wait period for new wood is about a month. Although the wood has been previously dried it is still best to allow it to acclimate to the climate prior to staining.

After a month the wood needs to be cleaned to remove mill glaze. Failure to remove the mill glaze can jeopardize the Defy stain’s performance. Use Defy wood cleaner and a pressure washer to wash the wood thoroughly. Do not use excessive pressure or the wood fibers may be damaged. Once the wood is cleaned and the mill glaze removed, apply Defy wood brightener as directed. This allows the wood pours to open and creates a more acidic surface, which will allow for better stain penetration.

Allow the new wood to dry out after cleaning for about a day or two. Apply your favorite color of Defy wood stain using a brush, roller, stain pad, or sprayer. Be sure not to over apply the stain. Once the wood is coated with Defy it will remain protected for several seasons as long as the wood was prepped correctly using Defy wood cleaner and brightener.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not washing the wood prior to staining. Some believe that because the wood is new it’s okay just to apply stain. However, mill glaze, which is created from extreme heat due to friction of the saw blade can create a film on the wood that will make it difficult for any stain or sealer to penetrate. This can cause premature failure of the stain product. So be sure to prep your KDAT wood a month after it is installed then stain with Defy for the best results.

Defy Stain is a synthetic resin, semi transparent wood stain. It is designed using hi tech Nano-Technology to produce a level of durability that has never been available in a wood stain product. Defy is easy to apply, especially for a water based stain. This is due to its effective penetrating ability. The best way to apply Defy Stain is with a sprayer, stain pad, or roller. A brush can also be used in smaller hard to reach areas.

It is important to know that the wood surface should be cleaned properly prior to applying stain. This cleaning process can be completed using the Defy wood cleaner and Defy wood brightener products. Follow the directions for cleaning and prepping the wood prior to staining. After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for several days.

When applying Defy stain using one of the application tools mentioned above, it is important to move swiftly to eliminate potential over lap marks. It can also help to stain one whole board at a time from end to end before moving on to the next board. Stain your way across the area using this method. Try not to stop in the middle of a board only to come back to it later. This will create lap marks that will be visible on the finish.

Once you have applied Defy stain to an area or section, let it sit and soak into the wood for 10-15 minutes. If there are any excess puddles of stain that are not soaking in wipe them away with a clean rag. If these excess puddles are left alone and allowed to dry on the surface it can result in an unsightly finish. Shiny blotches are the result of over applying the stain. If all the stain is absorbed into the wood and it seems like the wood is thirsty for more then wait about 30 minutes and reapply a second coat. As long as the second coat soaks in continue applying but wipe away any excess puddles that are not absorbed before they dry.
